A walk on the Walls of Dubrovnik
The Walls of Dubrovnik are what makes the Croatian city so special. Although the Old Town is relatively small, the view from above can change with every meter. The Dubrovnik City Walls not only offer spectacular views of Dubrovnik but give you an idea of its very special charm, that made it so popular to thousands of visitors each year.
Dubrovnik is one of the most visited cities at the Adriatic sea for a reason. The city lies in the very South of Croatia and is perfect for a weekend trip from anywhere in Europe, preferably in late spring or early autumn. If you already have plans to go there, better don’t miss my Guide to Dubrovnik – The Pearl of the Adriatic.
When it comes to things to do in the city, the best is to take a walk on the Old City Walls of Dubrovnik (Croatian: Dubrovačke gradske zidine), that are of course on the UNESCO list of World Heritage Sites one of the most picturesque Dubrovnik attractions. The city walls were partly rebuilt after the horrible 1990s war, lead you 1.2 miles all around the Old Town Dubrovnik and offer unbelievable views of the place from any kind of angle.
The main entrance to the Walls of Dubrovnik can be found just outside the main gate to the Old Town, where you need to buy a ticket for 70 Kuna which is round about 9 Euro or 11 US-Dollar. I know that might sound like quite an amount of money, but believe me it’s totally worth every penny.
Before I will let some photos of the Walls of Dubrovnik speak for themselves, I just wanna give you one more advice that you won’t find in the Lonely Planet: Take – Your – Time!
You can easily spend two hours wandering around the Walls of Dubrovnik, looking down to the crowded cobblestones streets, over to the old St. Lawrence Fortress and to the close island of Lokrum. Look up to Srđ, the backyard mountain of Dubrovnik and let your gaze wander over the unbelievably turquoise water of the Adriatic.
That is all I have to say. For more, have a look at my photos now and find everything you need to know down in the hard facts section. Enjoy!

When it comes to Dubrovnik, a pretty good deal is the book Top 10 Dubrovnik and the Dalmatian Coast. But in case that you are going to spend more time in Croatia and the Balkans I can only recommend the Lonely Planet Croatia and the even more detailed Lonely Planet Southeastern Europe.

Great photos, and really good advice about taking your time. The first time I walked the walls I didn’t leave myself enough time to really appreciate all the gorgeous views. I went back again and did it right the second time, and I’m glad I did!
Oh no Julie! But good to hear that you have actually found the time to do the walk again. I would absolutely love to go back and do it, let’s say, every third day 🙂
Dubrovnik is really amazing, even more if you see it when there is not so crowded. During the summer streets and the wall is packed! My favourite place is actually not in the old city, but up, on a nearby hill – view point, where you have stunning views – day or night!
Do you mean the view from the mountain “Srd”, Nina? That view was really breathtaking! I just stood there for over an hour and let my gaze wander over the water and down to Mini-Dubrovnik. Did you stay for the sunset? I absolutely loved it. That moment was really just burned in my memory…
Great tips 🙂 the only thing I would add is, if you’re there in the summer take more water than you think you’ll need. I loved Dubrovnik , really loved it. We arrived in the afternoon, did a quick tour of the city centre, and then were left to walk the walls- which was great! It really was, but even late in the afternoon it was packed. I think I’d walked as far as the corner that I consider to the Kings Landing inspiration before I started to wait patiently and not jostle through tourists. It was magnificent up there.
Great advice with the extra water Sammi! And you are right, it’s hard to avoid the tourist crowds up there…
Great tips here and great shots. Loved your advice too to take your time. Definitely a place to visit (and wander) without a hurry. 🙂
Right Sandra, I’d love to go back soon! Have you been to Dubrovnik before?
King’s Landing! Your photos are stunning! I’ve never been to Dubrovnik but I would love to. I was very close to it, in Zadar and now I really regret I didn’t go to Dubrovnik as well. Maybe one day 🙂
Oh no, Jowita! You know for me, it was just the other way round. As I have on a big road trip through 7 states of the Balkans, I only had 3 days in Croatia and spend all of them only in Dubrovnik. Need to go back to explore the rest of Croatia soon! How was Zadar?
I was in Croatia this summer but just couldn’t go to Dobrovnik hearing from everyone how crowded it was…So I skipped it..Would love to visit it because I know it is really beautiful..but not in the summer!
I can totally understand that Elena, in mid-summer it’s really annoying with all the tourist crowds. We should invent a switch button and with one click all other tourists are gone 🙂
When I was in Dubrovnik I actually stayed in a hostel within the walls! Sadly, I was feeling really sick while I was there and didn’t walk the wall. When I did feel better, it was crowded with cruise ship passengers and we didn’t have time to do it later. Your photos definitely captured the vibe and essence of Old Town Dubrovnik though. It feels like I’m there again!
One of my favorite experiences in Dubrovnik as well. I love how relaxed the whole city was, new town and old town. Great photos!
That’s true Adrian, Dubrovnik was really relaxed so that it somehow calmed you down. Need to go back for sure!
Such a picturesque place Clemens! All those rooftops and the beautiful colour of the sky! Definitely inviting!
Fantastic photos, it brings back many memories of my trip to Dubrovnik. Thanks for sharing, I’ll have to revisit myself now.
Hahah thanks, Luke! I’ll be back as well for sure.
What a lovely place and your pictures are sensational. I will probably only visit Dubrovnik by cruise ship sometime, but it would be a nice place to see even for a short visit. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks Melody! Dubrovnik is definitely worth a short visit as well. But make sure to get rid of the other hundreds of cruise ship passengers visiting the Old Town all at once 😉
Love your photography style! 😀
Thanks Tanj, nice to hear that. I guess everyone can make beautiful photos from the Walls of Dubrovnik. It’s so nice up there.
