A new species of travelers: the iPad photographer

Let’s be honest: who seriously still wants to lug around a heavy DSLR camera? And making photos with the puny smartphone? That’s not cool. For contemporary travel photography it takes only one thing: an iPad. And with it comes a new species of travelers. I call them the iPad tourists.

Ipad-1

The iPad tourist is omnipresent these days, whether in London, Lima, Lhasa or Luxor. Whether on the street, squares, or even in churches. What at first glance might look like someone who just loves surfing on his tablet outdoors, is actually a multimedia-thinking strategist.

The iPad tourist does not need a whole range of devices to drag from one tourist rip off to the next. No, one high-tech product in the pocket is enough. And of course it has to be the one with the apple on it. Finally, you have to show it around in public all day.

The iPad tourist sees himself as the traveler of tomorrow, paving the way for a new generation of travelers with new ways of handling multimedia. Who needs a DSLR, when even discounters sell cameras that come up with thousands of pixels?

The iPad tourist knows his craft and he uses his tools properly. By holding the tablet computer in a proper angle in the direction of a sight and by then masterfully touching its Retina display with a finger, one can make a great shot of the must-see, or let’s say must-photograph. Of couse, only if you can rely on day-long exercise and the right instinct.

One can only wonder, what the secret of the iPad tourists is. Is it just that he is smarter than others? Is it his way of thinking decates ahead and it’s just that nobody recognizes it? Will all globetrotters, flashpackers and weekenders soon imitate him?

One may wonder what will happen in the future. Until then, I will still carry my heavy DSLR around with me. I’m pretty sure that at least my neck muscles are steeled this way.

Have you ever seen the iPad tourist? What’s your opinion about travel photography with an iPad? Leave a comment!

    Sehr geil geschrieben! 😉

Hey Clemens, da hast du wohl recht, the iTourist is a new species, but actually one that defines the subtle difference between traveler and tourist. There actually seems to be no better way to express: Look at me, I am a tourist!
I remember shaking my head while looking at some Chinese tourists in Nepal who were sensitive enough to take iPad photos at a Hindu cremation site and of a human body being burned. It seemed highly inappropriate, especially in this circumstance and I cannot believe, or at least I hope that this will not be the new trend… :/

Hi Dennis! OH! MEIN! GOTT! That sounds awful! Can’t believe that there are some people out there who really don’t know how to behave in some situations…

Wunderbarer Artikel! 🙂

  13. Oh, God! The first time I saw one of those my first thought was “WTF?”. Ever since, I realised it’ll be hard to beat them. So just let them be. When they upgrade their iPad they’ll probably realise they’ve never synchronised anything and will lose all their pictures. No, no, I’m not cursing them. At all.
